Rock climbing with Outward Bound California
Director, Shooter, Editor
GoPro Cause
Details
I was invited to join an Outward Bound activation in Berkeley California to capture the experience of the middle school students and use that content to create a video showcasing the spirit of the program and support of the organization.
Part of the day, the kids participated in activities that encourage cooperation, leadership, communication, problem solving, and inclusivity, while the other half was dedicated to rock climbing, which require those same skills in a different way.
Production Notes
As the director, I spent most of the day weaving interviews with the program director, facilitators, and students while capturing the daily activities without distracting them from the overall experience. Pro-tip: It’s impossible to blend in if you are holding a bunch of GoPros and working with kids. I quickly realized I would need to figure something out to avoid the students being overly distracted by the presence of so many “cool” GoPro cameras, so my solution was to convert each kid into my personal production assistant. They all got to take turns wearing the cameras and helping me capture their story, which added to the collaborative nature of the day.
I was also able to use a 360 “GoPro MAX” camera to quickly capture full scenes without having to be in the middle of the activities and let the kids wear the cameras to capture authentic personal moments of challenge and triumph.
